The outdoors provides one of the major activities for many visitors to the Eastern Sierra.

Fishing

Georges, Shepherd, Independence, Goodale, and Tinnemaha Creeks abound with trout. Bass and catfish are found in Billy Lake and the Lower Owens River.  Contact Ed Mather at Mather Shell for the latest information on fishing spots and bait.

Hunting

Wild land game birds, waterfowl, deer, elk, and bear may all be taken in the appropriate seasons.

Backpacking

Shepherd, Onion Valley (Kearsarge Pass), Baxter, Sawmill, and Taboose trailheads all provide access to the Sierra backcountry. The Pacific Crest / John Muir Trail is only 7 miles from the Onion Valley trailhead.

Hiking

The public lands around Independence are all open for hiking. The Sierra to the west and Inyo Mts. to the east provide year-round hiking, exploring adventures.

Swimming

The Owens Valley School pool is open during the summer.

 Float-tubing the Owens River and Billy Lake is very popular.
