Georges, Shepherd, Independence, Goodale, and Tinnemaha Creeks abound with trout. Bass and catfish are found in Billy Lake and the Lower Owens River.  Contact Ed Mather at Mather Shell for the latest information on fishing spots and bait.

Wild land game birds, waterfowl, deer, elk, and bear may all be taken in the appropriate seasons.

Shepherd, Onion Valley (Kearsarge Pass), Baxter, Sawmill, and Taboose trailheads all provide access to the Sierra backcountry. The Pacific Crest / John Muir Trail is only 7 miles from the Onion Valley trailhead.

The public lands around Independence are all open for hiking. The Sierra to the west and Inyo Mts. to the east provide year-round hiking, exploring adventures.
