ONION VALLEY VISITORSYou must store your food in portable bear-resistant food canisters when camping east of Kearsarge Pass. The counter-balance method does not work. There are no food storage lockers. Bear-resistant food canisters fit inside your backpack. You will be able to carry 6 to 12 days of food. Repackage your food and plan your meals carefully. All food, garbage, personal care items (soap, sunscreen, toothpaste) and anything with a scent must go in the canister. Store your canister away from your tent, backpack, water and cliffs. Leave backpacks open with all pockets unzipped and away from your campsite. Since the bears in this area are highly intelligent, strong and innovative, do not leave your food unattended for even one minute, day or night. Canisters are sold at many sporting good stores. They are available for sale and rent in Lone Pine, Big Pine and Bishop. If you have any questions please call the Mt. Whitney Ranger Station: 760-876-6200. Proper food storage is required by federal law (this means using a canister east of Kearsarge Pass).
